High school students from NIS schools across Kazakhstan visited Nazarbayev University as part of their preparation for the VIII International Field Olympiad of Young Geologists, which will take place in Astana from July 4 to 12, 2026.

During the visit, students attended two educational lectures delivered by professors from the NU. The first lecture, “A Historical Perspective on the Theory of Plate Tectonics,” was delivered by Dr. George Matthews. The second lecture, “Formation and Destruction of Crust on Earth: A Plate Tectonic Perspective,” was delivered by Dr. Jovid Aminov.

The lectures introduced students to key concepts in Earth sciences, including the development of plate tectonic theory and the dynamic geological processes that shape the Earth’s crust. Through these sessions, participants had the opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with real geological processes and broaden their understanding of geosciences.

In addition to the academic session, students learned more about Nazarbayev University through a presentation delivered by Darya Sibirtseva. They also explored the NU campus and discovered academic opportunities available in the field of geosciences.

The session was coordinated by Saida Dyussebayeva, who facilitated communication with NU professors and NIS representatives, arranged the room and IT support, and supported the overall organization of the visit. Darya Sibirtseva welcomed the students, delivered the university presentation, guided the campus tour, and supported photo and video coverage of the event.

NU is pleased to support young students in their academic journey and to contribute to the development of interest in Earth sciences, research, and future careers in geology. We wish all participants success in the upcoming VIII International Field Olympiad of Young Geologists.
