On October 22, 2024, the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (SEDS) at Nazarbayev University hosted the 2024 Workshop on Sustainable Energy and Materials Systems (SEMS) for the first time. This event brought together leading experts from academia and industry to discuss innovations in sustainable energy and advanced materials. Led by NU SEDS Professors Annie Ng and Yanwei Wang, the workshop focused on bridging the gap between research and industry, underscoring Nazarbayev University's commitment to advancing sustainable infrastructure and green technologies.
The event showcased innovative materials and techniques for sustainable infrastructure, including presentations on the Astana Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project and Energy China's solar and wind power initiatives within Kazakhstan. Research presentations by Nazarbayev University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering highlighted groundbreaking work in materials engineering, such as heat-resistant basalt fiber composites and high thermal conductivity polymer composites.
The presentations began with insights into advanced material applications by Mr. Ji Chenglong of China State Construction Engineering Corporation, followed by Mr. Xu Yihao of China Energy Engineering Corporation, who discussed principles of sustainable green development. Nazarbayev University’s Professor Zhang Dichuan presented on lightweight cementitious composites for seismic retrofitting, illustrating the potential of using industry byproducts in structural innovations. The workshop also featured Dr. Wang Wenzhong and Professor Bai Shulin from Peking University International Innovation Center in Shanghai, who introduced advancements in basalt fiber and polymer composites.
The workshop provided a valuable networking platform, fostering discussions on collaborative research and paving the way for future partnerships between Nazarbayev University, Peking University, and industry leaders.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Provost Professor Ilesanmi Adesida, who acknowledged the contributions of all participants. In a final gesture of appreciation, he awarded certificates to the speakers, recognizing their valuable insights and active engagement throughout the event.
